Drawn to Comics

It looks like we're both sketching with any moment we can spare...possibly an Artists' Alley slotinside San Diego International Comic Convention! I have three projects I'd like to get finished, if not five, but at the top of the list is Not Another Comic Book! I warmed up with thumbnails of a friend's superhero comic that's in the works and soon joined Marc Kane in putting together our own story again.

We both sketch from life as well as photographed models. If you've ever wanted to try, it just starts with sticks and circles---then it's a matter of determination, and enjoying the task for its own sake!

I also had a ball penciling in occult titles, real and imagined and funny, into a book shelf for a panel set in a studio. Since my pages won't be published, without revealing anything else about the project, here's my pencils.

I had directions to include two Filipino artists and decided to learn something while picking out a photo reference: I found Botong Fransisco and his 1960's era mural art, and before him, Fernando Amorsolo. Amorsolo was presented as so influential that his fellow Fillipino artists tended to fall into camps of imitating or creating opposite styles in reaction to his popular art. He's known as the "Painter of the Filipino Sunlight." Born in 1892, he was known for pastoral themes and portraits of common people working and surviving with dignity; during World War II, the Japanese Occupation became his subject, depicting its destruction, as mentioned in this Hub Page: http://littleprincess1.hubpages.com/hub/The-Controversial-Painting His backlighting technique is his primary contribution to Filipino art. Amersolo, who died in 1972, was "an incessant sketch artist." Nice for him to help me out this once. I gave the figure a shirt based on the cover art for Dio's "Magica" as a nod to the story's creator.

I decided to look up a little surrealist art and found the Low Brow Movement. I won't attempt to summarize here, but the point is, I thought I'd do a bit of research. I ended up doing one background piece based on the theme "Rocket Man," then added a lovely female face and darkness, thinking about Bill Sienkiewicz.

Finally, Marc Kane took a pregnant friend's picture and commemorated the days of Shonna expecting, and then, inspired by the Leprechaun Horror Movie Fest on SyFy, she continued the first sketches of Gaby and Celestia. WE've been discussing their backstory again; the comic's going well, and we have a basic concept and the majority of the plot in mind, allowing it to remain elastic long enough to see what turns may lurk with the addition of characters inspired by Princess Jenn and Miss Bonnie Delighte.

All right, sketches to follow! Long live Not Another Comic Book! Or: Not Just a Comic Book! That may work better as a title; what do YOU think? (Wait till you see the other tricks we have up our sleeve---even a trio of script pitches, hush hush till the Con!)

Let's Draw: basic figures

Listen, since I couldn't sleep and there's this one year of Avengers written by Jim Shooter I always wanted to read, I dug in last night, and found I'd bought the first one in the series (as well as the fill-in, #169...grr) years before. The second story features Janet Van Dyne's first fashion show, and this made me want to draw a nice dress for a simple figure, and then, some nice words for my very special girl. Then I slipped it into her bag. It thanks her for all she does, basically. You get the picture.

Dawn inspired me: we want to base a comic on a model and a designer, and tonight, in the shower, some marks on her back from exercise gave me the missing piece of my Not Another Comic Book Story, then she began to fill in blanks, herself, regarding a chilling omen early in the comic. I realized, too, I could tell one key scene as dialogue after the fact without showing it, so I can stick to my strengths, which are not drawing mansions, but my downtown neighborhood, the Embarcadero and Seaport and Coronado. Now, I can return to the beach scene with Princess Sexy Jenn and company.

Another pic, from me, came while I visited her for a few minutes while she minded a front desk in another hotel, the one where we worked out and met that nice girl tonight, in fact. Oh, she had a boy who thought she was very nice, too. I sketched from my phone, for about five minutes, in an effort to convey a strong figure with simplicity.

I'll include some anatomy studies next time out; I wasn't feeling very well but with that simple sketch today, I responded to the inspiration of the many drawings Dawn Birdsong has managed in her spare time. Here, she has included Miss Bonnie Delighte with a sword, and with the wall decoration, succeeds in providing depth and dimensionality between the sword, the woman, the back wall.

All drawing is for yourself, but you will enjoy it lots more if you can think of some person who will be happy when they see what you've made. Make it from the love of the figure, and draw whatever you care about. Make it from the love of people. Make it from the love of art itself. Share THAT and your drawings will survive your long march to perfection, your Olympic training and persistence.
Drawing inspired by my recent reading and response to Englehart's Avengers run in the mid-70's.

You will find yourself drawing more! I, for one, am shifting gears---maybe as a bike shop manager?---but I do intend to draw with the same gusto with which I wrote, always writing what I wanted but savoring the doors it would open. I could not sleep tonight, already thinking of Mary Magdalene...on the moon...

Favorite Humor Books: Groo the Wanderer, Fabulous Furry Freak Brothers

Local Favorites: Jay Allen Sanford, Billy Martinez
Always wanted to try : Cerebus Vol. 2

My Christmas stash this year involves a score of back issues of Power Man and Iron Fist, Morrison's Seven Soldiers book, Moore's Halo Jones, Fantastic Four 240-242, the latest three issues of Amazing Spider-man, and doubtlessly some surprises. But that's what I'll be reading while I'm alone this morning, with some good music on.

This has been a great year of revisiting comics, but while I don't plan to buy many for a while now, I do plan to write and draw about FOUR by Summertime! Two comprise the sequel to the DnA comic; another is the redrawn version of the Stuckwayze Forev-ugh. The color one will be Not Another Comic Book---also redrawn, and replotted for a tight 25 page adventure not quite like any other comic book.

I really stopped buying many comics regularly over the last decade, so there's a lot of stuff like POWERS and CHEW I'd probably give a chance. I got much more introspective here: http://ceaseill.blogspot.com/2010/01/letter-about-dads-and-old-comics.html One day I'll be just in the mood to tell you about the many faces of my old hobby, myself. Art and story together creates a fantastic possibility for collaboration; there's nothing quite like the private world between your hands where the movie you make is YOU filling in the world around those panels. I like the constant switching the brain does, dealing with words and pictures. I often get great ideas on other things and leave my comic lying around open all day unfinished.

I am sure I've forgetting something cool I'd like to tell you, but my mind's both full of a lot of things...and quite empty at the present.

Speaking of the present: Merry Christmas, one and all!!!!

Be Chill Cease ill

*Cahiracter involves an in-joke you either know or don't care about.

Not Another Comic Book! (Down the Least Traveled Roads)

Down the least traveled roads

The cover for issue one of Not Another Comic Book: what to draw, who to draw?

Celestia, her spiritual guardian/ focal self Telea, friend Gabby Pepper, and Ku, the Void/ Empty being that eats ghosts. These became my focus, with a cameo by Mysti Hazel in her symbol-constructed super real Witch Hazel form, below. I left open a couple of spots to demonstrate that Celestia Englehart is a model; I planned at that point to research a couple of outfits.
The logo was not yet fully considered, so I grabbed my place holder and just doodled with three pens at hand. I was inspired to try a block letter later, but it could still be up for grabs. In the second piece, I've stuck to black and white, so as to start with basics here on Trial Two.

With the busy weekend for music, with some hanging out and restorative rest besides fresh (as you can get it in San Diego) air, business came again Monday, and after walking back from Little Italy with supplies (to give as presents and to try things you'll see soon!) and tummies full of yummy lasagna and salad and tea from Filipi's Pizza Grotto. With Gary L. Shipman now contracted to aid Integr8d Soul on three covers, the best representation we could manage on trial two became our priority. You might well enjoy his duo effort with Rhoda Shipman, Pakkins' Land; here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pakkins'_Land

So, with the help of my lightbox I examined the forms from above and reconsidered elements. Overall I made it less busy.

There are so very many interesting characters for you to meet in Not Another Comic Book, I took a long time deciding on this cover. Now, inspired by our 2006 and 2007 efforts to create this unique story, we plan from the start to make it a full-color presentation. I have very high hopes you will see our finished product this summer, but I guarantee screen printed t-shirts and posters and previews will be found on Integr8dsoul.com---so in the meantime, we're preparing our Marc Kane Fashion Bags (with ties to these characters via 'Gabby Pepper Bags') for photography, along with our posters featured on this very blog last summer, as the first items there for sale!

Here, I have a wider array of implements, including two Micron pens. I gave more attention to line weight. I thought a lot about raising the central figure in the vertical plane, but also considered the length of the mast head available for the logo. Telea's hand is 7/10 of the way up the cover's length. She is a stunning being of light, presently appearing in such a raw spiritual form that her luminous face burst forth with a glow through which her face can only be guessed. Most likely, in her, one is to see one's self.

Whatever is your fondest desire---how ever many pieces it may contain---I hope in it you find wholeness, as down the least traveled roads of all, we find our stories.
